Libre 2 Launched in the US; Libre 2 App Not Yet Available

Abbott has officially launched its Libre 2 CGM in the US, although the website (view here) has not yet been updated at the time of this publication. Of note, Abbott disclosed the Libre 2 App remains under review by FDA, suggesting the user must purchase the dedicated reader. New Farxiga hHF Post-MI Study (DAPA-MI) Receives Fast Track Designation; Abbott and J&J Q2 ’20 Earnings Updates; Dexcom G6 Temporary Approval in Pregnancy by Health Canada

A series of diabetes-related news has been observed: AstraZeneca announced it received Fast Track designation for Farxiga to reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure following an acute MI based on the new DAPA-MI study, JNJ (press release; slides) and Abbott (press release) hosted their Q2 ’20 earnings calls, and Dexcom announced Health Canada provided temporary approval for use of G6 in pregnant women in response to COVID-19. First Libre 3 Clinical Study Initiated

A CT.gov record has been observed for what is believed to be the first Abbott Libre 3 clinical trial. Abbott publicly disclosed the existence of Libre 3 during its Q1 ’19 earnings call (previous FENIX insight). Recall, the Libre 2 CGM was recently approved in the US, but its use with integrated systems is limited due to Vitamin C interference (previous FENIX insight). There is no mention of Vitamin C in the Libre 3 CT.gov record. Libre 2 AID Compatibility Hypothesis

Libre 2 US Approval Was Worth the Wait for Abbott, but Not Its Pump Partners

Abbott announced FDA approval of the Libre 2 iCGM in patients 4 years of age and older; however, the initial approval comes without closed-loop compatibility. According to FDA’s 510(k) database, Libre 2 was approved on Friday, June 12, but FDA typically doesn’t update the database until Monday. Recall, Libre 2 approval had been delayed for undisclosed reasons, but FENIX recently anticipated a near-term US approval with the closure of Bigfoot’s Series C (previous FENIX insight).
